Plastic surface treatment
Surface treatment is the process of forming a layer of material surface with one or more special properties through physical or chemical methods. Surface treatment can enhance the performance of products in terms of appearance, texture, functionality, and other aspects:
Appearance: color, pattern, logo, gloss/lines (3D, 2D);
Texture: feel, roughness, lifespan (quality), streamline, etc;
Function: Hardening, anti fingerprint, anti scratch;
Below is a detailed introduction to various surface treatment processes for non-metallic 3D printed parts:
1、 Screen printing
Screen printing generally refers to screen printing, which uses a screen as a substrate and uses photosensitive plate making methods to produce screen printing plates with graphics and text.
Process characteristics:
1. Screen printing can use various types of inks. Namely: oil-based, water-based, synthetic resin emulsion type, powder and other types of inks.
2. The layout is soft. The screen printing layout is soft and has a certain degree of elasticity, which is not only suitable for printing on soft items such as paper and fabric, but also suitable for printing on hard items such as glass, ceramics, etc.
3. Screen printing has low embossing force. Due to the low pressure used during printing, it is also suitable for printing on fragile objects.
4. The ink layer is thick and has strong coverage.
5. Not limited by the surface shape and area size of the substrate. As mentioned above, screen printing can not only print on flat surfaces, but also on curved or spherical surfaces; It is not only suitable for printing on small objects, but also for printing on larger objects. This printing method has great flexibility and wide applicability.
Application:
Screen printing has the advantages of large batch size, low price, bright colors, long shelf life, and fast delivery, and is increasingly recognized by the industry and widely used.

2、 Transfer printing
Transfer printing is one of the special printing methods. It is capable of printing text, graphics, and images on irregular and irregular surfaces, and is now becoming an important form of special printing. For example, the text and patterns on the surface of mobile phones are printed using this printing method, and many electronic products such as computer keyboards, instruments, and meters are printed using transfer printing. The transfer printing process is very simple. It uses steel (or copper, thermoplastic) gravure printing and a curved transfer head made of silicone rubber material. The ink on the gravure printing is dipped into the surface of the transfer head, and then pressed onto the surface of the desired object to print text, patterns, etc.
Pad printing is an indirect printing technology that transfers the patterns and text on gravure pad printing steel plates to products through a concave rubber head. Nowadays, it has become an important printing technology. Pad printing technology first etches the patterns and text on the design or product onto a printing plate to make a pad printing steel plate. The etched pad printing steel plate is coated with special pad printing ink using a pad printing machine. The excess ink is scraped off by a scraper blade of the pad printing machine, leaving ink in the areas with patterns and text. The pad printing machine then descends to the steel plate to pick up the ink in the patterns, and the pad printing rubber head shifts and descends to the product to print the graphics and text on the product, completing the pad printing process
3、 Water transfer printing
Water transfer printing technology is the latest digital imaging technology that surpasses any printing technology. It uses specialized paper and special environmentally friendly ink made of nanomaterials to print images on any solid medium. Its biggest technical advantage is that it does not require specialized equipment, is not limited by the medium, does not require specialized consumables, and does not require high temperature heating. It can print any image on any solid object or any curved surface at will, with bright colors and absolute photo quality.
Process (implementation method):
Water transfer printing is a special chemical treatment film that is printed with the desired color patterns and then flat on the surface of water. Using the action of water pressure, the color patterns are uniformly transferred onto the surface of the product. The film automatically dissolves in water, and after cleaning and drying, a transparent protective coating is applied. At this point, the product presents a completely different visual effect.
4、 UV paint
UV paint is the abbreviation for Ultraviolet Curing Paint, also known as UV curable paint or photo initiated coating. Its characteristics include long activation period, excellent resistance to yellowing, good hardness, and high transparency.
Process (implementation method):
UV varnish is a transparent coating, also known as UV varnish. Its function is to spray or roll coat the surface of the substrate, and then irradiate it with a UV lamp to transform it from a liquid state to a solid state, thereby achieving surface hardening. It is scratch resistant and has a shiny, beautiful, and smooth texture on the surface.
